BABY DEDICATION FAQ & REGISTRATION
WHY SHOULD I DEDICATE MY BABY TO THE LORD?
The bible teaches us in Psalm 127:3 that "children are an inheritance (a blessing) from The Lord."
Child dedication is an opportunity for the parents to honor The Lord for his blessing by dedicating their blessing, (by dedicating their child back to the Lord.)
The scriptural root of a child dedication is found in 1 Samuel 1:27–28 (NASB), where a godly woman named Hannah prayed year after year for God to give her a child. He answered her prayer and she gave birth to a son, whom she named Samuel. When Samuel was born, Hannah prayed these words: "For this boy I prayed, and the Lord has given me my petition which I asked of Him. So I have also dedicated him to the Lord; as long as he lives he is dedicated to the Lord."
In Luke chapter 2 of the New Testament, following the birth of Jesus, Mary and Joseph took the infant Jesus to the temple and dedicated Him.
In both Scripture passages, the parents entrusted their children completely to God. Dedicating your child to God is a public declaration of you as a parent or parents entrusting your child unto the Lord.
SHOULD I HAVE MY BABY BAPTIZED INSTEAD?
Throughout the New Testament, the Bible teaches that baptism is a public expression of worship symbolizing the new life we have when we follow Jesus. In the Bible we see that Jesus’ parents dedicated Him to the Lord (Luke 2:22–40), and He was later baptized as an adult (Matthew 3:16–17).
We understand that some churches practice “baptism of confirmation” for children however this Baby Dedication Ceremony is intended to be a commitment between the parents and God on the behalf of the child. The parents promise to raise their child in the faith until the child is old enough to make his or her own personal confession of Christ.
This Christian custom custom began about 300 years after the Bible was completed and is different from the biblical examples of new believers being baptized to publicly profess their faith in Jesus. With a heart to follow this Biblical model, at Providence we provide opportunities for baby dedication and believer’s baptism for children over the age of seven.
We are excited that you are interested in having your child dedicated to the Lord. We encourage you to invite friends and family to attend, so that they can join you in praying and celebrating this special time with you.
